Liverpool Amazes

Twenty-three years ago, the Buffalo Bills played the Los Angeles Raiders in the AFC title game.  The Bills came out blazing, moving down the field so quickly and easily that, less than two minutes into the first quarter, the Raider defense called a time out, simply to get their bearings.   Didn't matter.  The Bills scored 41 points in the first half and went on to crush the Raiders -- who were very good that year -- 51-3.  Every Bills fan alive knows about that Raider defensive timeout; it was the perfect encapsulation of the Bills' dominance.

Which brings me to today's Liverpool-Arsenal match at Anfield.  Arsenal was top of the table and undefeated since December 14.  They're quality and were in good form.  Irrelevant.  In the first 20 minutes, Liverpool scored four goals and could have scored more.  It was among the most thrilling minutes of soccer I've ever seen, anywhere.  Arsenal was totally overwhelmed, shell-shocked; they would have taken a Raider-like timeout if they could.   Amazing.

For Liverpool not to qualify for the Champions' League would be a soul-breaking disappointment.
