Liverpool, the team I picked to win the Premiership, got crushed by Everton 3-0. One game is one game, but Liverpool haven't resembled championship material this young season. Or so I've read, because none of Liverpool's matches have been on FSC, the only soccer channel I get. Yes, I'm whining both about Liverpool's crummy performances and not seeing them.

Arsenal looked unsteady as well today, drawing 1-1 at home with Boro. I actually fell asleep during that match (and for much of United's immediately following win over Tottenham). My sleeping wasn't an insult to the match (although it was nothing special) -- actually, it's a zen compliment to professional soccer. Pro futbol often puts me into a placid trance where I don't think about anything other than the game -- a very rare state, as I'm generally otherwise pre-occupied with a great deal of nonsense. Combining the trance-like, happy calm of watching soccer with a beer or two can be lights out if I'm at all behind on my sleep. This isn't so when I'm watching the U.S. national team, or a very important game (WC or CL elimination); then I'm too nervous.
